The Myth of Orthodontics in Youth: Why It's Wrong 

For generations, we have been told that orthodontic treatment should be carried out during adolescence, and that once you are over twenty, it is too late. This belief has no clinical basis. Teeth continue to move throughout our lives: if they move spontaneously into incorrect positions, they can also be guided into the correct positions under the controlled guidance of an aligner.

The real difference between an adult patient and an adolescent is that, in adults, the bone is denser and tooth movement takes slightly longer. But this is not an obstacle: it is a factor that digital planning takes into account right from the start.

What does change profoundly, however, is the context. An adult cannot — and does not want to — wear fixed braces with metal brackets for one or two years. They have meetings, clients, appointments, and a certain image of themselves that they wish to maintain. And this is where clear aligners make a radical difference.

Adults who choose clear aligners 

There is no single profile. Adult patients who consider aligners generally fall into three categories, each with their own distinct motivations.

Anyone who has never had orthodontic treatment as a child 

For various reasons — financial, family-related, or simply because it was not considered necessary — many people reach adulthood with teeth that have never been straightened. Over time, they have often come to terms with living with a smile they are not happy with: they cover their mouths in photos, limit how much they smile in public, and avoid certain foods when with others.

The moment when they decide to take action is often linked to a change in their lives: a new job, a promotion, a significant event, or simply achieving the financial stability they lacked when they were younger. These patients have already made the decision for themselves: they are simply looking for the right solution and the right professional.

Who has already had their braces, but didn't keep the retainer

This is the most common scenario among patients aged between 25 and 45. Orthodontic treatment was carried out during adolescence, but the retainer was no longer worn a few months after the end of active treatment. Over time, the teeth have shifted again, either slightly or more noticeably.

This type of orthodontic relapse can be effectively treated with aligners, as the teeth need to be moved back to a previously achieved position, with generally contained movements. In many cases, the treatment lasts no more than 6-10 months.

The professional who wants discretion 

Lawyers, doctors, salespeople, teachers, managers: anyone who works with the public on a daily basis cannot afford to be seen wearing fixed braces for one or two years. The impact on perceptions of authority and credibility is real and well-documented.

Clear aligners solve this problem: they are virtually invisible, and in the vast majority of conversations, nobody notices a thing. Many patients tell us they completed their entire treatment without their colleagues or clients ever realising.

Why do aligners fit into adult life 

The fact that aligners are removable is not just a matter of convenience. For an adult, it is a necessity. This means:

• Eat normally during meals, without any dietary restrictions
• Brush your teeth with a normal toothbrush, without special interdental hygiene tools
• Remove the masks for important occasions: a business presentation, a wedding, a job interview
• To play sports to touch or play an instrument without interference
• Maintain optimal oral hygiene for the entire duration of the therapy

This last point is often overlooked. Fixed braces make it difficult to clean between your teeth and increase the risk of tooth decay and gum problems. With aligners, you clean your mouth exactly as you always have: you take the aligners out, brush your teeth as normal, and put them back in. That’s it.

Is there a difference in how adolescents are treated? 

From a clinical point of view, the protocol is essentially the same. The main difference concerns the bone’s response: in adults, the tissues are denser, and this can slightly prolong the time required for more complex repositioning procedures.

On the other hand, adult patients have a huge advantage when it comes to adherence: motivation. Teenagers sometimes forget their masks or wear them for fewer hours than necessary. An adult who has made a conscious decision to undergo treatment tends to follow the instructions diligently — and this leads to better results within the expected timeframe.

First visit 

We’ll examine your mouth, assess the health of your gums — adults often show the first signs of gum recession, which is important to monitor before and during treatment — and determine whether aligners are suitable for your case. We’ll explain exactly what we can correct, how long it will take, and what your treatment plan will be.

3D simulation and plan approval 

Using the digital intraoral scanner, we capture the dental arch with absolute precision. The software generates a simulation and we show you the result on the screen. You can request changes before approving the treatment plan. Only then are the aligners produced.

Therapy and follow-up 

You’ll receive your set of aligners along with detailed written instructions. Check-ups are scheduled every 4–8 weeks: they’re short, efficient and designed for those with a busy schedule. At the end of your active treatment, we’ll give you a retainer with instructions on how to use it to maintain your results over time.

Adult Patient FAQs 

From what age can aligners be used? 

There is no upper age limit for treatment with clear aligners. The only prerequisite is that the permanent set of teeth has come through — which usually happens around the age of 12–14 — and that the patient has good oral health. Patients aged 50, 60 or 70 are successfully straightening their teeth with aligners every day.

How long does it take to see the first results? 

The first noticeable movements usually become apparent within the first 6–8 weeks. In some cases — particularly in patients experiencing a relapse — changes can be seen as early as after the second or third aligner. Progress is slow but steady, and the 3D simulation shows you every stage of the process right from the start.

Do aligners interfere with crowns or bridges that I already have? 

In most cases, no. The presence of crowns, bridges or fillings is not a contraindication to treatment. It will be up to the clinician to assess, during the initial consultation, whether and how these pre-existing restorations affect the treatment plan for the specific case.
